Bursting with historical interest, Colonel Grogan originally built Grogan’s Castle in the 1930s, which has since been renovated and restored to its former glory. An incredible man of vision, Colonal Grogan left his legacy in the area of Taveta and beyond. In the 1930s he built kilometers of water canals, all fed by Njoro Kuba springs in Taveta. He propagated sisal, cotton, mangoes, coconut palms, avocados, maize and more in this region and towards Lake Jipe he set up a 45 acre fish farm, constructed to breed Tilapia. Innovatively the water was supplied to the farm by canal (from the springs in Taveta), due to the lake water being too alkaline for fish-breeding. Colonal Grogan also imported the first Rainbow Trout from Scotland and introduced them into the Mt. Kenya region, he constructed Kilindi Harbour in Mombasa and was responsible for starting commercial logging and the saw-milling industry in Kenya.
